Marshaling estate assets is a crucial step where we meticulously identify and catalog all of the deceased person’s possessions. This includes everything from bank accounts and real estate to vehicles, jewelry, and personal belongings. Ordinarily, we’ll work closely with the executor or administrator to compile a detailed inventory.
We then have to determine the fair market value of each asset. For this, we often engage appraisers who specialize in different types of property. This valuation process ensures that assets are distributed equitably among heirs.
Consequently, once the inventory and appraisal are complete, we file them with the court as part of a formal accounting. Transparency is key in probate, and this step ensures all parties involved have a clear understanding of the estate’s financial picture.
Remember, during this phase it’s not uncommon to uncover hidden assets or face disputes over valuations. I recall one instance where we discovered a forgotten safety deposit box containing valuable heirlooms. It was a heartwarming moment for the family to rediscover these treasures.
